Jockey Niall Madden announced his retirement at Punchestown today.
Madden won the 2006 Aintree Grand National when he guided ‘Numbersixvalverde’, trained by Martin Brassil, to glory.
His last win came when he rode ‘The Long Mile’ in the Tim Duggan Memorial Handicap Chase at Limerick on Monday. His final race was with ‘Rich Belief’ in the Tote Supporting Punchestown Maiden Hurdle.
The man known as ‘Slippers’ reminisced about his career after his final race on New Year’s Eve.
“I’ve had a great career. It was nice to finish up here at my local track,” said Madden.
Madden was also thankful to everyone who helped him throughout the course of his career.
“I’d like to thank all the owners and trainers who have supported me over the years and obviously Mam and Dad and Aine (Madden’s partner).”
The jockey has nothing planned after horse racing as of yet but does have an idea as to what he would like to do.
“I’ve no major plans, although there are a few roads I’d like to go down. Nothing is set in stone and I’m open to all job offers,” revealed Madden.
