The two big guns in Carlow senior football met once more at Netwatch Cullen Park on Friday night to decide this year’s senior football league Division 1.
A repeat of the 2020 and 2021 senior county finals, this was always going to be a tight affair.
Indeed, Éire Óg had claimed the Covid-delayed 2020 title last year before Rathvilly found an edge in the 2021 decider to stop the Carlow town club doing an historic five-in-a-row.
Based on last night’s result, there’s still not much separating the sides though the championship is still to come this August.
Both sides were still feeling each other out with 12 minutes on the clock and the score standing at two points apiece but a quick blitz from Rathvilly had the defending county champions 1-06 to 0-02 ahead with 20 minutes gone. Come half time, they had extended their lead slightly, going into the break 1-07 to 0-05.
Éire Óg came back into the game in the second half, the sides level with around ten minutes to play but it’s Rathvilly who would claim this year’s league crown, running out 1-11 to 0-12 winners.
