On a weekend where Brian Cody was dominating the airwaves on the hurling front, Ladies Day was making a successful return to Gowran Park after a covid-enforced absence.

While the sun and temperatures may have dipped a little bit, the style stakes were high with one of the biggest racing days of the summer back in action for the first time since 2019.

And while the subject was very much ‘Ladies Day’, it turned out to be more like ‘locals days’ when the results started rolling in.

“The winners were provided by locals in five of the eight races on Saturday”, says Gowran Park manager Eddie Scally.

“The first race went the way of trainer Emmet Mullins with his horse Thebestisyettobe. The home-bred won at a price of 11/1 which was a great start to the day for Emmet.”

“In the 2.20 is was Sistine Madonna, trained by Joseph O’Brien who won that at 9/4. The 2.25, we kept it local still with Zaur winning for Mikey Butler of Mooncoin. The 3.30 went the way of Helmet Star, a really big-priced winner at 40/1 and that one was ridden to victory by Danny Sheehy of Graignamanagh.”

“The 5.10 went the way of Brewel Hill, ridden by Shane Foley also of Graignamanagh. So five of the eight races were won by locals. We also had winners on the card for Tom McCourt, Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh.”

“Weatherwise, the heatwave had broken just before Ladies Day so unfortunately, it was a bit windy at the track but that didn’t stop the style stakes, they were really high. There were a lot of ladies and gents dressed with style, and appropriately for the competition so great fun both on track and off track for the day. It was a brilliant day, dominated by our locals which is brilliant to see. We love to see local winners on our local track.”
