Kilkenny’s Eoin Murphy, Paul Murphy, Padraig Walsh, Cillian Buckley, Conor Fogarty, Richie Hogan, Walter Walsh and TJ Reid were all in the running for the 15-man All-Star team for this year.

But who made the cut? The announcements, along with footballer and hurler of the year – voted on exclusively by the players – were made earlier this evening at Dublin’s Convention Centre.

2016 Hurling All Stars

  1. Eoin Murphy (Kilkenny)
  2. Cathal Barrett (Tipperary)
  3. James Barry (Tipperary)
  4. Daithi Burke (Galway)
  5. Pádraig Walsh (Kilkenny)
  6. Ronan Maher (Tipperary)
  7. Padraic Maher (Tipperary)
  8. Jamie Barron (Waterford)
  9. David Burke (Galway)
  10. Walter Walsh (Kilkenny)
  11. Austin Gleeson (Waterford)
  12. Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher (Tipperary)
  13. Richie Hogan (Kilkenny)
  14. Seamus Callanan (Tipperary)
  15. John McGrath (Tipperary)

While Richie Hogan was picking up his fourth award tonight, it was first time out for Glenmore’s Eoin Murphy, Tullaroan’s Pádraig Walsh and Tullogher-Rosbercon’s Walter Walsh.

Tullogher take on Carrickshock this Sunday in the Michael Lyng Motors Kilkenny Intermediate Hurling Final – a game we’ll have live on KCLR from 2.45pm.

Speaking about the awards, Uachtarán CLG Aogán Ó Fearghail said

“This great game of hurling which is unique to us as a people helps us keep in touch with the heroes and warriors of our past – and I want to sincerely congratulate the modern day heroes who have been announced as GAA/GPA All-Stars for 2016.

“Yet again it is a selection of the very highest calibre and as they enter the history books as prestigious holders of this coveted award it is a tribute to their families who stood behind them and also their Clubs who helped mould them into the players they have become.

Along with his All Star award, Austin Gleeson make it a triple celebration night, coming home with Hurler of the Year ahead of Tipperary’s Seamus Callanan and Padraic Maher while also picking up Young Hurler of the Year ahead of Waterford team-mate Shane Bennett and Tipp’s John McGrath.

Clare’s Tony Kelly was the only other player to win both individual awards, that occasion coming in 2013 after their All-Ireland victory.
