Anything to declare? Marble City Boxing return from the UK with four medals

Marble City Boxing Club are coming back to Ireland in style after taking home four medals from the Barum International Box Cup in Ilfracombe, United Kingdom , adding to the ever-growing collection of titles.

The competition drew the toughest competitors from England Scotland Wales and further afield in Europe kicked off last Friday evening. Before the competition ever started and a punch was ever thrown, the Marble City Men reiterated how important it was to try and be there on the final day to give themselves every chance of taking home a medal for the club.

They did just that with Jack Johnson Niall O’Donnell, Josh Dowling, and Tommy Fitzpatrick progressing to Sunday’s final day.

Tommy Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick was the first man into the ring for the Barum Box Cup Schoolboy A 34kg final, he faced the tough unbeaten GB champion from London. It was a battle from start to finish with both lads landing some great scoring shots, every second of the three-round fight was intense and very little to separate both lads in the finish, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Tommy on this occasion but taking home a silver medal in his first international tournament is a great achievement.

Niall O’Donnell

O’Donnell was due to face the Welsh national champion in his final bout however the Welshman pulled out of the contest due to a hand injury sustained resulting in Niall taking home Gold for the team.

Josh Dowling

Dowling was the next man who battled his way to the final of the Schoolboy A 72kg division. He faced the current unbeaten GB schoolboy Champion. A very close contest between two very tidy operators saw it all square going into the final round on all five judges cards. A flip of a coin could have decided the decision at the finish but the home man got the nod on this occasion, no doubt these lads will meet somewhere along the line again and Josh. Another silver medal was claimed for a first-time box cup competitor.

Jack Johnson

The final man to take to the ring yesterday evening was Jack Johnson in the final of the Junior A 52kg division. He faced a tough opponent from Devonport. Jack started the bout well establishing his jab and working well switching between head and body. A dominant display throughout the three rounds ensured Jack was victorious claiming gold and the title of Barum International Box Cup champion.

The Marble City’s stellar record at international box cup events continued last weekend with the club taking home four medals from four competitors, two gold and two silver. A great way to kick on for the upcoming season
