There was somewhat of a surprise in the Carlow Senior Hurling Championship last night.
Reigning champions St Mullins were defeated by 4/1 outsiders Ballinkillen at Newatch Cullen Park.
Ballinkillen done away with the sweeper system which they had used in their big defeat to Mount Leinster Rangers and got much more joy as a result.
After trailing by five points at the break, St Mullins introduced James Doyle at half time after he returned recently from the USA, however Marty Kavanagh still wasn’t available and that was a big blow to the Champions.
In the end it finished 0-17 to 2-6 and Ballinkillen were full merit for that victory after missing further scoring chances.
The curtain raiser yesterday was in the Intermediate Hurling Championship where Mount Leinster Rangers beat Naomh Eoin by 1-14 to 1-11.
