Evergreen and Thomastown served up an absolute cracker in the KCLR McAlmont Cup Final at Derdimus on Saturday evening.
With the two sides making the headlines for their exploits on the National stage, this was always going to be a tasty affair and so it proved.
Thomastown hit the front on the 20 minute mark via Mick O’Neill and they led up until half time.
The second half was barely a minute old when Sean Barcoe equalised for Evergreen and he was to have a telling influence on the game.
Just as the game trickled in to the last half hour of normal time Jamie Owens put Evergreen 2-1 up but young Rory Monks had Thomastown back on parity in the final ten minutes after his introduction with a fine goal.
There was late drama when Conor English hit the bar for Evegreen in the dying moments of normal time and so extra time was on the horizon.
The winner arrived early in the first period of extra time when Sean Barcoe again found the net and that was to prove the decisive goal as Evergreen became Cup Champions.
The two sides meet again at 7.15 on Wednesday in Thomastown where a result for Evergreen would see them become Premier Division Champions as well.
