Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has been dealt a blow, with the news that Jack Byrne has been ruled out for up to three months.

The Apoel Nicosia midfielder will have surgery today (Monday) to repair a herniated disc, according to his club.

A statement from Apoel confirmed the news:

“Jack Byrne will undergo surgery in the afternoon to deal with the problem of disc herniation that afflicts him in the middle. The estimated recovery time is determined at 3 months.”

The Dubliner has not featured for Apoel since the start of February and this rules him out of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Luxembourg.

Byrne joins James McClean and John Egan on the list of players unavailable for the qualifiers.

Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Alan Kelly has called time on his involvement with Stephen Kenny’s senior side as has Damian Duff recently.
