Preseason continues for Carlow and Kilkenny rugby clubs this weekend with a full programme of rugby action running in the counties and around the country ahead of the Leinster League junior rugby openers.

There’s something of a gulf in the divisions between the two local rivals this season, Kilkenny competing in Division 1A having topped Division 1B last season while Carlow, resident in 1B, slip down to Division 2A.

As a curtain-raiser for a busy season of rugby for both sides, the South East League kicked off two weeks ago, producing disappointing results for both Kilkenny and Carlow’s J1s. Carlow slipped to a four point defeat to New Ross, losing out 16-12 while at Foulkstown Kilkenny needed late tries to put some decent scores on the board against a strong Enniscorthy side, the Wexford men returning home on the back of a 35-17 victory.

The sides met on three occasions last year, photos from some of their clashes you can see below but ahead of this weekend’s games at Oak Park, we spoke to Carlow Rugby PRO John Shirley to fins out how the preparations for the coming season are going; take a listen below.

Carlow and Kilkenny J2’s face off at 1.30pm while the J1’s will do battle at 3pm on Sunday.
