You read that right, Carlow are Kennedy Bowl Champions.
They took on Limerick county today in the decider with a Seamus Lynch goal looking to be the decisive winner of the game. A calm assured finish under the legs of the goalie in the first half looked enough to bring the Cup Barrowside.
Tension rose as Carlow fought to see out the tie well into injury times. Fans’ calls for the whistle to be blown were ignored, with the hint that Limerick could snatch something growing and growing with each passing second. Then disaster struck, a long free found its way into the box and at the feet of Alex Woodland from Limerick who scored with the last kick of injury time to drag the match into extra time.
It would be easy for any side to drop the head after that, however, Carlow battled throughout extra time and it looked like penalties beckoned.
That was until with the clock ticking Carlow grabbed a late goal of their own courtesy of Callum Brennan in the dying embers of extra time. The move started with a tremendous defensive clearance up the park and ended with the ball in the back of the net.
Fans ran from the hills to celebrate the goal which felt like it most certainly would be the winner. They were not wrong.
