CARLOW CBS (St. Mary’s Academy) showed a great head for heights as they announced themselves in the Leinster Schools Senior A Football Championship with a big win over Dublin’s Colaiste Éanna in Netwatch Cullen Park today (Tuesday).

The Carlow side, who won the Leinster and All-Ireland B titles last year, showed they are full worth for their elevation to the A ranks as they repeatedly recovered from the concession of well taken goals to stay in front and won out by 0-17 to 3-5.

Colm Hulton and Shane O’Neill landed three points each for Carlow with another telling three point contribution coming from sub Gavin Healy in the closing minutes to clinch a first round victory.
Colaiste Éanna, who would be one of the main feeder schools to Dublin powerhouse Ballyboden St Endas, have had their Senior A hopes ended at the first fence.
Elsewhere, there was an impressive display from Knockbeg as they saw off Maynooth P.P by 1-13 to 0-7 in their first round clash in Maynooth University.
Michael Doran bagged 0-8 (0-5 frees) and Darren Looney scored 0-3 with a punched John Byrne goal a crucial score in beating the Kildare side.
There are three more first round games on Wednesday – the big one being the meeting of Moate C.S. against St Benildus of Dublin. There is also a senior hurling league final between St Kieran’s College and Dublin North.
