Carlow’s Des Foley made it to the Race Of Champions event last week and but for clipping a bollard in the skill test would have found himself in the running with some of the biggest names in world motorsport.

In wet conditions on Thursday last, Foley nicked a bollard on one of his timed runs, incurring a five second penalty which ultimately ruled him out of the main event on Saturday.

As he says himself “I did manage to beat former and future F1 drives Nelson Piquet Jr and Jolyon Palmer, however this is of little consolation considering what I now miss out on”.

As you can see from the times above, five seconds sure makes a big difference and would have slotted him in nicely behind Sebastian Vettel in the pecking order for advancing.

It's never a nice feeling to miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity, but you've got to take the good with the bad….

It’s onwards and upward for Foley for 2016 and with big ambitions in racing, it’s worth keeping an eye on his Facebook page to see what comes next.
