Carlow Ladies Footballers just miss out on All Ireland Final place

Carlow Ladies Footballers 2017

Derry 0-6

Carlow 0-5

Carlow Ladies Footballers suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Derry yesterday in the All Ireland Junior Championship Semi Final in Louth.

Early scores from Edel Hayden, Rachel Sawyer & Aoibhinn Gilmartin had Carlow in the ascendancy early on and by all accounts it seemed like it was going to be a high scoring game.

Emma Doherty was to the fore for Derry from placed balls and she converted three of these to bring the sides back level and just before the break Edel Hayden & Ciara Moore exchanged points to make it 0-4 apiece at half time.

Hayden put Carlow ahead again early in the second half but remarkably this was to be Carlow’s last score of the game.

Emma Doherty scored again for Derry and namesake Eimear came off the bench to pop the winner and Carlow just couldn’t muster up that equalising score.

It’s been a very encouraging season for Carlow who have really improved under Bart Gilmartin and they will undoubtedly push on with a great young squad.
