Institute of Technology Carlow postgraduate student Stephen Maher has this week been voted the GAA.ie Hurler of the Week. The honour recognises Stephen’s hard work and dedication as a member of the first Institute of Technology Carlow hurling team to reach the final of the Fitzgibbon cup.
Stephen, who is better known to players and friends as ‘Picky’, is a postgraduate marketing student at the Institute. In winning the GAA.ie Hurler of the Week title, Stephen received 1,753 votes to take the top spot over Mary Immaculate player Cian Lynch.
Stephen put in a fantastic performance against Mary I in the Fitzgibbon Cup final last weekend. Although beaten in the final, Stephen finished with a personal tally of 1-13, 1-1 of which was scored from play. He has been consistent throughout the year for the Institute of Technology Carlow hurling team, scoring 11 points in the Fitzgibbon Cup semi-final and, previous to this, racked up a score of 3-12 to secure a place in the quarter final.
Under the guidance of Kilkenny legend and team manager DJ Carey, Stephen has played a pivotal role in the Institute of Technology hurling team’s journey and 2017 is Stephen’s 5th season in IT Carlow colours. The Ballacolla club man has also been part of the Laois senior hurling panel for the past number of years.
