Carlow man Steve Lennon will face fan favourite Devon Peterson if he overcomes Daniel Larsson in the first-round of the World Darts Championship.
The 2019 World Cup finalist will be hoping to surpass his best result of a second-round performance in this year’s competition. Lennon has struggled for form in 2020 in the televised major championships, only making it past the first round in the U.K. Open.
Lennon’s Irish teammate Willie O’Connor could potentially face ‘Superchin’ Daryl Gurney if he can see off the challenge of Niels Zonneveld in his first-round tie.
Cork sensation Ciarán Teehan will face Wayne Jones in his opening match.
Other Irish players who will be hoping to perform well at darts’ showpiece event are Brendan Dolan, Mickey Mansell and Meath teenager Keane Barry.
Elsewhere, 2020 World Champion Peter Wright begins the defence of his crown with a match against either Steve West or Amit Gilitwal. Michael Van Gerwen will be hoping to claim a fourth world championship at this year’s event held at the iconic Alexandra Palace. The Dutchman will have a tough encounter against the winner of the tie between Ryan Murray and Lourence Ilagen.
The tournament begins on December 15th and runs all the way into the New Year until the final takes place on January 3rd.
