Carlow’s dreams of playing Division 1 Hurling for 2018 crashed and burned at Pairc Esler in Newry on Saturday as they lost out to a more determined Antrim side on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-15.
Colm Bonnar’s charges paid a heavy price for a very poor first half which saw Carlow outfought, out thought and outmuscled, but despite all that they only trailed by four points at the break.
Carlow improved in the second half but a series of missed chances proved costly. At the very end Marty Kavanagh had a chance to bring the game to extra time with a 21 yard free which Denis Murphy won, but unfortunately his effort was dealt with by Antrim keeper Chris O’Connell and it was the ulster men who prevailed.
