A leader by nature.

The words of Dicksboro senior manager Mark Dowling on the news that Cillian Buckley will lead the Cats on the hurling stage for 2018.

Keeping with tradition of the county champions getting to nominate a player from their ranks to captain the county team, Dicksboro’s Buckley will take over the honour from last year’s captain, O’Loughlin Gaels’ Mark Bergin.

Dicksboro won their first county championship in the senior ranks in over 20 years this year with Buckley the obvious choice for the captaincy. While Bergin was named captain for 2017, due to injury and limited game time, it was Richie Hogan who lead the Cats on the field last year.

Of Buckley’s appointment, Dowling says “he’s an excellent candidate for it”.

“He’s a leader by nature and he’s certainly a lad who will stay grounded. He’ll carry the weight of captaincy on his shoulders no problem at all – it’ won’t affect his performances or anything.

I think he’ll just go about that job the same way if he wasn’t captain. He’ll do stuff on the pitch, that’s the best way to lead and that’s what he does.”
