A planned civic reception for two of Carlow’s Olympic athletes has been shelved until early next year.
Carlow County Council had been planning to roll out the red carpet for sprinter Marcus Lawler and equestrian standout Sam Watson.
It was 3:45am Irish time on 3 August this year that Lawler lined up in lane seven for heat six of the 200m. While he ran a season’s best at the time (and since bettered it) his result wasn’t enough to progress to the semi-final stages, finishing 29th overall.
Watson travelled to Tokyo as part of the Irish eventing team who finished their Olympic stint in eighth place overall.
The ceremony has now been deferred due to the worsening Covid-19 situation.
It is hoped to hold the event in the new year, though a date has not been set.
