In a significant move for Ulster hurling, Davy Fitzgerald has been appointed as the new manager of the Antrim senior hurling team.
The former Clare, Waterford, and Wexford boss has agreed to a two-year term with the Saffrons, marking a new chapter in his illustrious managerial career.
Known for his passionate and intense approach, Fitzgerald brings a wealth of experience and success to the role. His track record includes leading Clare to All-Ireland glory in 2013 and guiding both Waterford and Wexford to provincial titles. Now, he faces the challenge of elevating Antrim’s hurling fortunes on the national stage.
Antrim’s excitement about this new chapter was echoed in a statement from county chairman Séamus McMullan, who welcomed Fitzgerald’s appointment. “We’re delighted to announce the appointment of Davy Fitzgerald,” McMullan said. “Davy brings a wealth of experience to the role. His vision, drive, and determination are a perfect fit with the ambition of our playing panel. We are confident, too, that Davy will bring the very best out of the emerging hurling talent that is present within our County.”
McMullan also highlighted Fitzgerald’s potential impact on the county’s future development. “We are committed to further developing our underage structures in Antrim and welcome Davy’s interest in contributing to that – that is an exciting prospect for our young hurlers and their clubs. On behalf of the clubs of Antrim, we wish Davy the very best and look forward to working with him and his team.”
With Fitzgerald at the helm, Antrim will aim to build on their recent success in retaining their place in the Leinster Championship and make greater strides in the coming seasons.
Waterford’s New Leadership
As Fitzgerald embarks on his new journey with Antrim, his former side Waterford are believed to be announcing his successor. Peter Queally, who came close to securing the position five years ago, looks set to be the next Waterford hurling manager.
. His two-year term will see him working alongside a formidable backroom team, including fellow Waterford legend Dan Shanahan and former Tipperary sharpshooter Eoin Kelly.
Galway Eyes Donoghue’s Return
Meanwhile, in another significant development, Galway appears to be edging closer to reappointing Micheál Donoghue as senior hurling manager. Donoghue, who guided Galway to their last senior All-Ireland crown in 2017, recently stepped away from his role with Dublin after two seasons, fueling speculation of his return to Galway’s top job.
