ElectroCity FIFA20 European Championships: Italy edge Turkey in opening fixture

Turkey v Italy

Mick Gavin’s Italy took all three points – just about – on the opening night of the ElectroCity FIFA20 Championships.

The first game of our FIFA20 tournament got underway around 7.30pm, streamed live on Twitch. Over the course of the next four weeks, 24 gamers across Kilkenny and Carlow are going head to head to find the region’s ultimate FIFA20 gamer on the PS4.

Daniel Nolan almost had a share of the spoils but for Turkey’s second goal to be ruled offside at the death.

Against the run of play, Italy broke midway through the first half with some neat passing setting up El Shaarawy to find Insigne unmarked at the back post and slot home for Italy’s first (26).

Italy doubled their advantage on 37 minutes, Nicolo Barella crossing low across the box for Lorenzo Insigne to volley home for his second.

With the pressure on, it was an immediate response from Turkey as Milan’s Hakan Calanhogu threaded a beautiful through ball to Burak, beating the Italian offside-trap and rifling home from six yards to get back in the game (40).

Insigne almost had a third for Italy on the stroke of half time but for his effort to fly wide left.

Nolan’s Turkey were more aggressive in the second half, pressing high and two minutes into injury time we saw high drama.

Cengunz Under squared for Okay on the edge of the Italian box, the timing of Okay’s pass to the retreating Calanhogu just off as he was flagged for offside with the ball in the back of the net at the death.

Italy top Group A with the 2-1 win with Wales and Switzerland set to face off later Saturday. Group B’s opening fixtures are also underway tonight with as Denmark (Caimin Brennan) and Finland (Paul Bergin) meet while European hopefuls Belgium (Billy Hayes) take on Russia (Paul Denieffe).
