It’s now 30 days since a former Kilkenny College student departed the Canary Islands destined for Barbados.
Kilkenny native Dr. Karen Weekes is aiming to become the first Irish female to row across the Atlantic solo.
On a 4,800km trip that’s expected to last until Mid-February, she’s been sharing updates online including this encounter with a shark on Monday.
“The next thing, I was looking out this way and my oar on the right-hand side whacked something really really hard because when you’re pulling the oars you’re pulling hard, and I looked over and it was a hammerhead shark, I clocked a hammerhead shark on the head,” said Karen.
“He came under the boat and hovered here, scary but it was nice afterwards, that’s for sure” she added.
