Kilkenny City Harriers Chairman John Maye says Ireland are severely underachieving at adult level when it comes to translating from the success and talent at underage.
John was speaking to KCLR after Thomas Barr’s bronze medal was Ireland’s sole medal at last weeks European Athletics Championships in Berlin, and he says the Athletes are not been developed at High Performance…..
“Somewhere in the middle of really selling the sport to the masses, we forgot about developing the high performance end of the sport and we don’t have a 3rd level structure, and in fairness to Carlow IT, Carlow IT are really really pushing the boat in trying to become a 3rd level option for Athletes in Ireland”
“We won’t have a 3rd level structure, we don’t have full-time coaches, we have an extremely well populated club base, but we are missing something like, we are not translating all these new members that we have picked up in the last 6, 7 years in the sport into high performance”
