IT Carlow Basketball Head Coach Martin Conroy says the Mens and Ladies Squads have plenty to play for in their remaining games in the National League.
The Mens Team are away to National Cup Champions Ballincolling in Division One, while the Ladies Team are at home to DCU Mercy in the SuperLeague.
Speaking to KCLR, Martin outlined what’s required for both teams.
“Yeah, like I mean we have three games left in the Mens Division One. We are good enough to get into the top four after Christmas. Like the objective has always been to stay there because we were kind of a couple games away from reaching first or second place.
“Out of the three games if we win two of them, that should pretty much secure 4th spot for us which would give us a play-off berth which is what we are looking to do with the men.
“The ladies on the other hand, we have 5 games including this weekends game and then we play Portlaoise away and Galway away so those two games are hugely important four our survival in Super League this year”
Conroy admits it is difficult for his squad to combine third level commitments and play National League fixtures on a weekly basis.
“We are trying to look towards getting more local talent involved. We have a couple of mainstays maybe you could say in the likes of Megan and Holly Dunne who have been with us since the program started, but it is difficult trying to entice good Basketball players to come to Carlow, study there and also play Superleague for us.
“We have done that over the last couple of years and with obviously victory scholarships as well and other Americans coming in, we have been very lucky.
It’s important that we stay in the Superleague after getting there because it’s a very difficult place to get to but if you go back down, it’s even more difficult to get back up,” he said.
