There were plenty of celebrations in IT Carlow on Tuesday night as the men’s and women’s college squads won their finals.

The Women’s Varsity Squad were first up against a very good WIT squad.

WIT kept it close in the first half with some excellent play from Rachel Thompson but the third quarter was massive for IT Carlow as they turned the screw and an 18 point lead through some brilliant defence from Captain Claire Melia and some excellent offence from Lauren LaPlant and Emma Carroll.

Melia was pulling the strings on offence too with some unbelievable passing and offensive boards.

It was a great way to start the day as they became the NBCC Women’s Div.2 All Ireland Champions on a scoreline of 84-64.

IT Carlow Squad: Claire Melia (Capt) 6, Lauren LaPlant 41, Emma Carroll 19, Shauna Mulhall 10, Meabh Collins 4, Aisling Henry 2, Nina Fulling 2, Maria Pallin Alfonso, Sine O’Neill, Sadie Keane, Dairine White

Men’s Final

The Men’s Varsity Squad were up next against an extremely talented UCD squad.

This game lives up to its billing with an overtime thriller.

IT Carlow finally got the better of the superb UCD lads in OT to win our second NBCC Championship of the day, 91-83.

ITC Squad: Ben Kelly Flynn 17, Nate Shafer 27, Gary Morrissey 13, Trevor Swayne 9, Eoin Hackett 8, Conor Gallagher 6, Edward Omorusi 4, Conor Byrne 5, Sebb Uglis 2, Scott Higgins, Edwin Mazgys.
