September 3, 1967: The Black and Amber Tide Turns.

That’s the name of a new four-part documentary series presented by Kilkenny’s Michael Fennelly on the 1967 All-Ireland senior hurling championship final between Kilkenny and Tipperary.

Regarded as a watershed moment in Kilkenny’s hurling culture, September 3, 1967: The Black and Amber Tide Turns will look at the buildup to the match, the team, the match and its legacy, talking to players, family members of players from both sides and others with their own memories of the game.

In the first part airing this Saturday morning at 9am, presenter Michael Fennelly gets a sense of the challenges and achievements in the years previous to 1967.

We hear about the tactics and skills employed by legendary Kilkenny manager Fr Tommy Maher to motivate and shape the team, while trainer Michael Lanigan talks about his contribution to the game and the role of County Board Secretary Paddy Grace in looking after the player’s welfare.

September 3, 1967: The Black and Amber Tide Turns is supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound and Vision scheme through the television license fee and sponsored by Castlecomer Credit Union.
