It was an action-packed weekend of cup action for the Kilkenny District League last week as teams across the county competed in the KCLR McCalmont Cup first round.
There have been some competitive games with four of the seven games being decided by one single goal. St. Johns certainly put it up to my side Castlewarren Celtic in the Watershed on Sunday just gone. Observing from the sideline I definitely noticed a difference in my players compared to league competition, there was an edge and grit due to the lore of the cup. Was fascinating to watch, as we as a club strived to get out of the first round for the very first time. (We always ended up drawing Evergreen A for some reason and lost on penalties to Callan last year!)
All though fixtures are coming thick and fast, particularly for Freebotters who are two games behind Evergreen in both the league and LFA Cup. Lads will be eager to elongate their soccer into the Summer if they can, due to the long layoff in the pandemic.
It looks like home advantage proved to play a factor in last week’s results, with five of the seven winning teams playing on their own turf.
