Kilkenny Athletics PRO Perri Williams says that having extra athletics events on the calendar is more than likely to cause a greater strain on young juvenile Athletes and their families
Speaking to KCLR ahead of todays (Sunday) County Cross-Country Championships in Kilmacow, she says it would be impossible for coaches to run athletes every weekend with the congested fixture list.
Perri said “In previous years, January would have been a relatively quiet month where the athletes could concentrate on training and work on their training, but now we just seem to have competitions every weekend”.
“It’s a case of coaches now have to choose what events their athletes can do because you are not going to let them race every single weekend”.
She said “Parents have to have some sort of a break too from travelling. Cross Country is every second weekend from September right through to December and it now seems that the indoors are kind of occupying every weekend spot with Cross Country taking any free weekends, so it’s very busy”
