Darren O Neill

Kilkenny man Darren O Neill fights in the last 16 of the European Championships in the Ukraine later.

Current European champion Joe Ward, Emmet Brennan and Kurt Walker are also fighting today.

If any, or all, of the Irish quartet win they’ll join Brendan Irvine and Seam McComb in the quarter-finals, and also qualify, along with Irvine and McComb, for the World Championships which begin in Hamburg, Germany in August.

McComb beat Russia’s current World Elite champion Vitaly Dunaystev yesterday, his second successive victory over the Kazakhstan-born Rio 2016 bronze medalist who beat Ireland’s Dean Walsh in the semi-finals of the 2015 Europeans in Bulgaria en route to gold after beating England’s Pat McCormack, who McComb meets in the quarter-finals in Kharkiv.

The top eight boxers in each weight the quarter-finalists qualify for Hamburg.
