Ok so the day of destiny is almost here and as usual the hype, anticipation, excitement and tension is palpable. And the ball hasn’t even been thrown in yet!
However one little topic that nobody has spoke about yet is a personal record which Kilkenny stalwart Jackie Tyrrell is aiming to match.
A certain Kilkenny legend by the name of Henry Shefflin is top of the pile when it comes to the amount of All Ireland Senior Hurling medals won.
“The King” incredibly has ten medals to his name and when he was aiming to break the record a couple of years back the media all jumped on the bandwagon to highlight it.
And rightly so!
However it baffles me to think that nobody has even mentioned the fact that Jackie is on the brink of equaling Henry’s record and he would do so tomorrow should Kilkenny get past the challenge of Tipperary.
Jackie Tyrrell has given years of service to Kilkenny hurling and has kept himself in great condition throughout his career which has put him in a position to come in to the fray and do a job for Brian Cody still if necessary.
Obviously the main focus in terms of the day itself is not personal accolades, but all about the team effort and if anybody felt otherwise on the day then it could be detrimental for either side.
But as a staunch Hurling fan I think it’s about time that somebody highlighted the fact that Jackie is on the verge of equaling a fantastic record set by Henry and if he does that then he deserves to be put right up there with Shefflin.
Kilkenny fans will dream of a famous victory tomorrow and how appropriate would it be if Tyrrell comes on to play a major part in getting Brian Cody’s side over the line for what would be a second 3-in-a-row and a 10th All Ireland Senior medal for Jackie.
All will be revealed tomorrow!
