Kilkenny 1-29
Laois 0-22
Kilkenny proved too strong for Laois on Sunday as they defeated their neighbours at UPMC Nowlan Park in the penultimate round of the Allianz National Hurling League.
Two points each from youngsters James Bergin and Eoin Cody gave Kilkenny an early lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Laois responded well with a point of their own but Cody, who took over the free-taking mantle from his clubmate TJ Reid for the encounter, added points along with Bergin and Richie Reid. The scoreboard read 0-09 – 0-03 as the players took their first half water break.
Kilkenny dominated with a Liam Blanchfield goal being preceded by fine scores from Reid and Michael Carey. Laois continued to struggle despite several well taken points as Blanchfield, Conor Fogarty and a Cody free gave Kilkenny a 1-15 – 0-09 lead at half time.
Laois never seriously threatened Brian Cody’s side as the Cats young forward line containing the likes of Martin Keoghan, Adrian Mullen, Cody and Bergin continued to prosper throughout the second half. ‘Cheddar’ Plunkett’s team put in a valiant effort but scores from Blanchfield, Mullen and Keoghan along with further points by Cody and Bergin putting the game beyond reach for the away side as Kilkenny ran out ten-point winners at UPMC Nowlan Park.
