Competitive soccer returned to Kilkenny on Wednesday night with the quarter-finals of the Pat Maher Shield.
There were three games up for decision on Wednesday with 6.45pm kick-offs, the winners advancing to the semi-finals.
A few eyebrows may have been raised at the score coming out of Fair Green as Freebooters A put ten goals past Bridge United on home soil.
Newpark and Fort Rangers were locked at 0-0 with 90 minutes played, Newpark running out 2-0 winners thanks to goals in extra time from Jack Poyntz and Ger Hayes.
In the evening’s other fixture, Thomastown United went down 1-0 to Evergreen with Sam Hickey sending the Kells Road side through to the penultimate stage of the shield.
Thursday
The last semi-final spot goes to Freebooters B who saw off Ormonde Villa 5-4 on penalties on Thursday night, the game scoreless after 90 minutes.
The Shield semi-finals are scheduled for 16 June. Will we see Freebooters A and B in the pairings?
