Thomastown United 1-0 Shamrock Rovers
Thomstown United recorded one of the most, if not the most, unbelievable results in Kilkenny soccer history on Saturday afternoon thanks to a last minute wonder-goal from Stephen Connolly.
It was a game in which both sides had their chances, especially in the opening 20 minutes of the tie with Thomastown keeper Aidan Hynes and Shamrock Rovers counterpart Luca Gratzer kept busy.
Rovers also had a goal ruled out for offside when Gary Shaw just timed his run too early, first half finishing at 0-0.
Thomastown kept the pressure and the intensity up over the course of the the game, but Rovers could – and should – have taken the lead in the closing stages when substitute Richie English missed the target.
With the score poised at 0-0 and the possiblility of extra time on the cards, up stepped Stephen Connolly with a looping effort from just inside the box and that proved to be the winner on the day.
Emotional scenes soon followed after referee Pat O’Connor blew the full time whistle and Thomastown will do some serious celebrating tonight.
