You could be forgiven for thinking Offaly might take their foot off the gas going into Saturday’s final round of the Joe McDonagh Cup, and they wound up doing just that as Carlow cruised into this year’s Joe McDonagh Cup final.
Already assured of a place in this year’s final thanks to four wins from four before this weekend, Offaly made 11 changes to the side that beat Kildare last week, providing a much-needed rest to some of Offaly’s faithful, Carlow knowing only a win would guarantee straight passage to this year’s championship decider.
In the end, Offaly proved no match for Tom Mullally’s side from the off as Carlow hit the first six points without reply, putting daylight between the sides with only 10 minutes on the clock and never looked back. By half-time they had added another ten to go into the break 0-16 to 0-6 up before adding another 1-13 in the second half to run out 1-29 to 0-14 winners, Conor Kehoe with Carlow’s goal 10 minutes into the second half.
