Sam Bennett has become the first Irish man since Sean Kelly in 1989 to claim the Green Jersey at the Tour de France.
The Carrick-on-Suir rider won on the Champs-Elysees and secured the Green Jersey on the final stage of the Tour in Paris.
Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar finished in the Yellow Jersey with the 21-year-old becoming the youngest winner of the Tour since 1904.
Sam’s former trainer Martin O’Loughlin has known him since he was aged 9 and began training him when he turned 15.
He’s been telling KCLR News this morning that such a win has always been on the cards:
“Absolutely buzzing like the whole town of Carrick (on Suir), it’s just fantastic, Sam has done what we always suspected he was capable of doing but he has just exceeded everybody’s expectations in such a year that we’ve had with Covid, it’s just fantastic that he has proven that he’s the fastest man in the world”.
