Marcus Lawler, Cliodhna Manning flying the flags for Carlow and Kilkenny at European Athletics Championships this week

The European Athletics Championships are officially underway with Olympian Marcus Lawler flying the flag for Carlow this week.

Lawler, running out of Clonliffe Harriers these days, is scheduled to take part in the men’s 200m event on Thursday morning (11.30am) and is also part of the 4 x 100m relay squad due in competition at 9am on Friday morning.

Over 35 Irish athletes have travelled to Germany with events running until Sunday evening. In all, 1,540 athletes from 47 nations will compete in over 50 medal events over the coming week. Previous European medal winners including Ferrybank AC’s Thomas Barr, Ciara Mageean and Mark English will spearhead the Irish contingent alongside world indoor finalist Sarah Lavin.

Also in the running for an appearance this week is Kilkenny City Harriers’ Cliodhna Manning who is part of the women’s 4 x 400m relay team alongside Rhasidat Adeleke, Sharlene Mawdsley, Sophie Becker, Phil Healy and Roisin Harrison. If Manning is selected to run, she could make an apperance in the heats this Friday 19 August.
