The club hurling curtain came down for Mooncoin in Croke Park on Saturday afternoon and at the final whistle, disappointment came along too as Mayfield were crowned All-Ireland Junior Club Hurling Champions for 2016/17 on the narrowest of margins.
Following one of the best end-to-end games of hurling we’ve seen in a long time, we caught up with Joe Murphy for this thoughts on the game’s outcome and Mooncoin’s season across the county championship, Leinster and All-Ireland.
The reality is, the County Final was our goal”, said Murphy in the tunnel post-match.
“To get out of Junior, to get to Intermediate, that was our goal for this year. The Leinster campaign, All-Ireland campaign is a huge bonus. We’ve enjoyed it, it’s been tremendous, it’s given us a new outlook on things and we’re intermediate – we’re waiting to face Thomastown now in the first round.”
This All-Ireland will be forgotten about. It will never be forgotten by the people of Mooncoin, but we have to turn our attentions now to Intermediate next year.”
