Kilkenny & District League got this years Oscar Traynor Trophy campaign under way when they welcomed Wicklow & District League to a breezy & cold Derdimus Park on Sunday afternoon.

The game started out very cagey for both sides, the visitors making the breakthrough when Kilkenny’s Robbie Lynch unwittingly picked up a back pass  resulting in a free kick inside the Kilkenny 18 yard box.

The visitors blasted the ball, taking a deflection and winding up in the back of the home side’s net.

Wicklow’s goal spurred Kilkenny on and just 15 minutes later they got their just rewards, winning free kick 25 yards out from the visitors goal.

Paddy Cahill claimed the ball, placing an excellent ball into the back of the net, leaving the ‘keeper with no chance to send the sides in level at the break.

It was more of the same throughout the second half but strong defending cancelled out any chances created from both sides, the game closing out at 1-1.

Next up for Kilkenny is an away trip to Meath to face the North East League.
