Sam Bennett is wearing the green jersey for the first time in the Tour de France today.
From Carrick-on-Suir Bennett leads the sprinters’ points race after a third place finish yesterday. This makes Bennett the first Irishman to wear green since 1989, where it was worn by fellow Carrick-on-Suir man Sean Kelly.
“Third Irishman to wear the green jersey, after 31 years, that’s very special for me, and I’m focused on keeping it,” Bennett said.
Stephen Roche in 1987 was the other Irishman to don the famous color which indicates the best sprinter in the Tour.
The worlds premier cycling event still has another 18 days to go, with a total of 16 stages.
Adam Yates is in possession of the race leader’s yellow jersey.
