GAA

The St Canice’s Credit Union Kilkenny Senior Hurling League returns this weekend after a two-week break.

It has reached its penultimate round and no team has confirmed their position in the table yet.

Dicksboro take on Mullinavat at 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Walsh’s team sit top of their group with three wins from their opening three games and star forward Andy Gaffney was complimentary of his the side’s style of play and strength in depth when he spoke to KCLR recently.

Danesfort have been in contrasting form as prop the rest of that group up with defeats in all of their games to date.

They face Tullaroan at 4 o’clock on Saturday, a game you can hear live on KCLR with thanks to Direct Water Treatment.

We’ll also have live commentary of Ballyhale Shamrocks’ clash with Bennettsbridge on Sunday at 2 o’clock with thanks to Gerry Comerford Drilling Limited.

Our first commentary of the weekend in Kilkenny is this Friday night at half past 6 when James Stephens and Erin’s Own meet in Muckalee.

We’ll have live commentary on all four games in the Michael Lyng Motors Hyundai Carlow Senior Football Championship this week.

It begins on Thursday at half past 8 when Fenagh take on Mount Leinster Rangers and that group is rounded off on Friday at half 8 as well with the clash of Bagenalstown Gaels and Tinryland.

On half past 7 on Saturday night, Eire Og and Rathvilly go head-to-head in a repeat of the 2022 final, while the second round is completed on Sunday evening when Palatine and Old Leighllin take to the Netwatch Cullen Park pitch at 6 o’clock.

All of those games are kindly sponsored by Dan Morrissey and Co.

There was one game last night in the Carlow Junior B Football Championship.

Kildavin Clonegal fell to a 1-07 to 3-12 defeat at the hands of Eire Og .

While there was wins for Blacks and Whites, Dicksboro and Conahy Shamrocks in the first round of the Kilkenny Vehicle Centre Minor Hurling Championship

There is a big game tonight in the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior A Championship Semi-Final.

Dicksboro meets St. Patrick’s from 18:30, the winner will take on O`Loughlin Gaels

Vera Pauw has left her role as manager of the Republic of Ireland Women’s team.

A statement from the FAI last night said the board decided not to offer her a new contract.

She had been out of contract since their World Cup campaign ended last month. Pauw was appointed in 2019 and led Ireland to their first-ever major tournament and a FIFA ranking of 22.

In the statement, FAI CEO Jonathan Hill thanked her for her hard work and commitment before wishing her well for the future. He also went on to say the future of the women’s game in Ireland is bright and said the focus now is to build upon the good work done by Pauw.

Tottenham are out of the EFL Cup. They were beaten 5-3 on penalties in the second round last night by Fulham.

Elsewhere, the Republic of Ireland’s Matt Doherty scored twice for Wolves as they beat Blackpool 5-0 at Molineux .

Luton Town are through to the third round thanks to a 3-2 win over Gillingham while Crystal Palace came from 2-0 down to beat Plymouth Argyle 4-2.

Bournemouth enjoyed a 3-2 win over Swansea and Brentford saw off Newport County on penalties.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Wicklow’s Dan Whelan has been selected on the Green Bay Packers roster.

He is set to be the first Irishman to play in the NFL since 1985.

TENNIS

Carlos Alcaraz has begun the defence of his US Open title with a quick passage to the second round.

He was 6-3 and 3-2 up on Dominik Koepfer when the German retired hurt.

Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev also won their first round matches in New York.
