Celtic are facing an uphill task to secure European football the other side of Christmas.
They had Daizen Maeda sent-off in a 6-nil defeat away to Atletico Madrid that leaves them bottom of Group E with just a single point. Next for Celtic is a trip to Rome to play Lazio in three weeks – the Serie A side beat Feyenoord 1-nil tonight.
Manchester City and R-B Leipzig have both secured places in the last-16 with two Group G games to spare. Erling Haaland scored twice as City romped to a 3-nil win at home to ten-man Young Boys. Leipzig were 2-1 winners away to Red Star Belgrade.
Newcastle’s hopes of reaching the last-16 took a serious blow earlier this evening. Eddie Howe’s side were beaten 2-nil away to Borussia Dortmund in Group E. AC Milan increased the heat on Newcastle with a 2-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain at the San Siro.
Barcelona must wait to secure a last-16 spot following this evening’s shock 1-nil loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in Hamburg. Porto are level on points with Barca in Group H courtesy of a 2-nil win at home to Antwerp, who finished that game with ten men.
In the competition tonight, Manchester United are away to FC Copenhagen in Group A with Marcus Rashford available for selection. Arsenal host Sevilla in Group B with Martin Odegaard a doubt. Those games kick off at 8pm.
