Offaly’s Shane Lowry posted a two-over-par second round 74 in the second round at The Players Championship earlier today.
The putter let the Clara man down throughout his round as he damaged his hopes of triumphing at TPC Sawgrass. Like his Irish compatriot Rory McIlroy yesterday, Lowry started his round on the back nine. Failure to make a birdie along with disappointing bogeys at 14 and 18 saw him out in 38.
Birdies on the first and the fourth helped The Open champion get back on track despite another dropped shot on the par-three third.
One final bogey on the seventh where he hit a fairway bunker from the tee leaves Lowry on two-under par halfway through the tournament. The Irishman entered the clubhouse five shots off overnight leader Sergio Garcia.
A number of players including Garcia tee off later this evening and Lowry’s hopes of challenging for one of golf’s most coveted prizes may now be dependent on how well those above him play over the course of the weekend.
