The Republic of Ireland secured a place in October’s World Cup playoffs last night.

Lily Agg’s header nine minutes after the break gave Vera Pauw’s side a 1-nil win over Finland at Tallaght Stadium to secure the second spot in Group A with Kilkennys Ellen Molloy, who will be amongst those receiving her leaving cert results today, was an unused substitute.

Only two places at next year’s finals are guaranteed for the nine teams who enter the playoffs, with a third facing an inter-confederation game in New Zealand.

Agg says the players are not getting carried away with the work still to be done.

“I think the girls are so focused, the staff as well. We have taken it step by step, nobody wants to think too far ahead. We knew tonight would be a big task.”

“The girls gave their all and the staff did. The plans worked, It’s Surreal. Vera said no partying but we will see about that!”

The Girls In Green face Slovakia on Tuesday and will then learn the nature of their route to the finals in Australia and New Zealand.

Pauw says the support from the fans was inspirational.

“The smile does not leave our faces. It is absolutely amazing that a game before the end of the campaign we have done it at a full stadium with such amazing fans. With so many children, so extremely happy and enthusiastic.”

“It fills your heart, I got no words.”
