Clare have given their full backing to hurling manager Brian Lohan after he claimed Wexford ‘nominated’ two of his panel as close contacts.
Wexford dramatically defeated Clare 2-19 to 1-21 last weekend in Cusack Park Ennis. . After this game, a number of the Wexford squad tested positive for COVID-19 leading to their Allianz Hurling League game with Kilkenny being postponed. That’s been provisionally refixed for Sunday.
The trouble then erupted when Clare players were identified as close contacts of Wexford players who attracted covid. This lead the individuals that were named, not being eligible to play their arranged fixture versus Laois.
Clare manager Brian Lohan spoke after the Laois game as to the anger felt among his camp, he said “It was very unusual for us to hear that two of our players were nominated by two Wexford players as close contacts. Particularly, given that one of those players only came on in the 51st minute and he nominated one of our players”
Wexford then described Lohan’s comments as “outrageous” and sought a retraction.
Instead, Clare are supporting their manager, insisting the HSE made the close contact decisions based on conversations with Wexford officials.
