Thomastown are your 2021 JJ Kavanagh & Sons Kilkenny Senior Football champions.
They may have had to wait 36 years, but in a closely-contested game, Mullinavat’s drive for five senior county titles in a row came to a screeching halt on a 2-06 to 1-05 scoreline.
By half time, a Stephen Donnelly goal proved the difference with boys in blue and white leading 1-05 to 0-5. Padraic Gahan levelled for Mullinavat hitting the second water break and it would stay that way almost to the final whistle before Rory Monks (goal) and Thomas O’Hanrahan (point) added the game-winning scores.
You have to go back to 1985 and a 5-03 to 1-05 victory for the ‘Town over Railyard for their last county final win before Sunday.
Their reward – outside of being named county champions for this first time since most, if not all, of the panel were born – is a Leinster club intermediate football championship quarter-final against Meath intermediate champions Trip.
That game throws in at Donaghmore Ashbourne GAA Pitch with a 1pm start this Saturday with the winners meeting either Park Ratheniska (Laois) or Crossabeg Ballymun (Wexford) in the semi-finals on 18 December.
