David Buggy Motors Kilkenny Sport Star Award Winner: Thomastown United

The winner of the David Buggy Motors Kilkenny Sport Star award for the month of May was announced on air earlier this week, and if you missed it, it’s a case of congratulations to Thomastown United’s U17s soccer team.

2023 has been a team effort so far with Coláiste Abhainn Rí, Clogh Handball Club and Freebooters Girls Under 12s named winners previously (no award in April). Hence, we’re delighted to recognise the achievements of Thomastown United’s U17 side who have just capped off another terrific season.

What’s most impressive is that the work started at Under 16 and before, the team completed a league and cup double last year and repeated a similar feat this year while also progressing to the last eight of the FAI Under 17 Challenge Cup.

In the Kilkenny & District League’s Under 17 League Division 1, they finished top of the table with nine wins from ten, finishing out with a 2-1 win over Freebooters (runner-up) in their last game of the season. The Con Downey Cup got underway in May which saw Thomastown pick up a 6-0 win over East End United, beat Evergreen Athletic 3-1 before going on to beat Freebooters in the semi-final over the June bank holiday weekend and run out as cup winners earlier this month.

Notable comments among the nominations this month praised the management and players as ‘hardworking and passionate’ with a ‘never die attitude’ and more.

Congratulations to all at Thomastown United and continued success at underage level for the future.
