Last year’s Tokyo Olympics saw healthy representation from Ireland including Carlow’s own Marcus Lawler and Sam Watson.
Tonight, both athletes will be honoured with a civic reception at the Woodford Dolmen Hotel.
Speaking to Scoreline this lunchtime, chair of Carlow County Council Fintan Phelan outlined the cause for tonight’s event.
“We were meant to do this last year”, Phelan says, “unfortunately, Covid had other plans for other but we’re delighted to be able to honour both Marcus and Sam this evening.”
“Marcus obviously competed for Ireland in the 200m at the Olympics and Sam Watson in the eventing competition.”
“It’s not often that Carlow has Olympians, and we have a number of Olympians from our county here. You could count them on your two hands, but we’re very proud of our Olympians here across the board and we’re very proud of Marcus and Sam.”
“This evening is an opportunity for Carlow County Councils as the lead civic authority to honour Marcus and Sam.
