Bagnelstown Gaels will meet Rathvilly next weekend in the highly anticipated quarter-finals of the Michael Lyng Motors Hyundai Carlow Senior Football Championship.

This match comes on the heels of the Gaels’ tough 2-16 to 0-09 loss against Old Leighlin, a defeat that secured Old Leighlin a direct spot in the semi-finals.

Old Leighlin’s performance was particularly noteworthy, marking their first victory over Bagnelstown Gaels in five years. The highlight of the game came from James Dowling, who delivered an impressive display, scoring 1-2 and playing a crucial role in his team’s success.

Reflecting on the match, Dowling spoke about the importance of his team’s pace and fitness, which have been standout factors throughout the season.

“I think we’re very fit and we’re very fast as well, so especially when we’re playing on the break. We get at the goal, just running straight at people. Two of our goals came from winning the ball off goal kicks and going straight for the goal,” Dowling explained. “We’re a very young team, and being fast and fit really helps, especially this year.”

Old Leighlin’s direct style of play, coupled with the speed and energy of their young squad, has made them a formidable force in the championship. Their ability to turn defense into attack quickly was evident in their commanding win over Bagnelstown Gaels, leaving the Gaels with much to think about as they prepare for their upcoming clash against Rathvilly.

As for Rathvilly, they will be looking to capitalize on Bagnelstown’s recent loss and advance further in the championship. The quarter-final promises to be an exciting and closely contested battle, with both teams eager to keep their championship hopes alive.
