Westmeath Senior Hurling manager Michael Ryan says they are under no illusions about the challenge they are expecting from Carlow in Saturday’s Joe McDonagh Cup clash.

Speaking to KCLR, Michael says the reason they were well beaten by Carlow in the Division 2 League Final was because of the standard of Hurling they played.

“To go back to the League Final, Number 1 we were very disappointed with our performance, but having said that, to be very fair to Carlow, part of the reason we played so poorly was because they were excellent on the day.

“All over the pitch, they won all the battles and they played really good hurling as well.

They are a very good side and they went to Laois last week and won by 10 points so we are under no illusions as to what to expect.

“They have to try and win the game to stay in the competition or at least get a draw so they will come out with all guns blazing and we will try and match that and see where that takes us,” he said.
