As the curtain-raiser to the start of the 2023 Kilkenny & District League soccer season, the 2023 Pat Maher Shield gets underway in the county this weekend.

Nine games were originally scheduled for this coming Sunday, though fixtures show that a home clash for Freshford against Freebooters is off with Freebooters pencilled into the quarter-finals. The opening round of games also sees Castlewarren Celtic due to take up residence in Buckley Park, the former home of Kilkenny City in their League of Ireland days, though it’s possible an alternative venue will be used as works continue to bring the playing surface back to its former glory.

All opening round fixtures will take place this Sunday with games underway from 11am.

Pat Maher Shield Round 1

  • Newpark AFC v Spa United AFC, 11am, Newpark
  • St. Johns AFC v River Rangers, 2pm, Garringreen
  • Thomastown United v Lions AFC, 11am, United Park
  • Ormonde Villa FC v Callan United, 11am, Garringreen
  • Castlewarren Celtic v Bridge United, 11am, Buckley Park
  • Clover United v Tullaroan AFC, 11am, Rathdowney
