Kilkenny United will have to wait until another weekend to pick up their first league win in the 2017 Women’s National League.

Away to Cork at Bishopstown on Saturday evening, United slumped to a 2-0 defeat to make it five league defeats on the trot.

Cork City opened the scoring with 9 minutes gone, some good work by Saoirse Noonan and Katie McCarthy setting up Tara O’Gorman for a neat finish. While Kilkenny had a number of chances in the first half, the hosts went into the break 2-0 to the good, Clare Shine getting under a Maggie Duncliffe (38 mins) corner to head past Trisha Fennelly.

Kilkenny stepped things up defensively in the second half, Fennelly denying Cork City more goal opportunities throughout the half and while United’s Leanne Payne came close on 89 minutes, it wasn’t close enough.

Speaking to KCLR after the game, Shane Murray (Kilkenny United) says

“In the second half Kilkenny came out got a bit more control of the game but just couldn’t put together a bit of quality in the final third when needed.”

“Our build up play was good at times, energy was good, but our link-up play was missing to backup some good play.”

“Loads to work on, but loads of encouragement going forward. The wins will come soon.”

The result hands Cork City WFC their first league win of the season after four games while Kilkenny, having played five, must wait their turn. They’ll face Shelbourne FC this coming Saturday at 7.30pm in the Watershed.

Final score, Cork City WFC 2, Kilkenny United WFC 0.

Kilkenny: Trisha Fennelly, Michaela Farrell, Leanne Tumelty, Cliodhna Ni Shi, Sylvia Gee, Bethany Carroll, Leanne Payne, Ciara Delaney, Michelle O’Regan, Becky Conroy, Emma Doyle. Subs: Megan Butler, Aisling carroll, Bronagh Kane, Lizzy Buckley
